The Artists

Visitors to the centre can see artists at work, enjoy our beautiful grounds and share a unique cultural experience with the artists. The artists of Hopevale cover a range of art practices, from the traditional to contemporary, including print making, etching, painting, photography, weaving, dancing, music and storytelling.

Artwork on display at the Nganthanun Bamawi Bayan Gallery includes work by Evelyn McGreen, Madge Bowen, Wanda Gibson, Silas Gordon, Phylomena Naylor, Harold Bowen, Derek Rosendale, Shane Gibson, Dora Deemal, and Grace Rosendale as well as many more including tractional woven fibre baskets and tradition artefacts. Our artists range in age from young adults through to Elders and Traditional Owners. The Hopevale Arts and Cultural Centre strives to empower all community members through intergenerational revival and preservation of culture. Hopevale artists have achieved notable successes in the past years and will continue to be leaders in the Indigenous fine arts industry in the future. Evelyn McGreen's print folio of 'Spirit Baskets' was purchased from the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 2009 by Parliament House Canberra for its permanent collection. In 2012 the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art also purchased Evelyn's 'Spirit Basket' folio for permanent display in their Indigenous fibre collection. At the 2011 Cairns Indigenous Art Fair Harold Bowen and Shane Gibson sold work to national and international art collectors. Legendary Indigenous singer and songwriter Geoffery Gurrumul was presented with Shane Gibson's 2011 'Yimbaala' Acrylic on Linen as a gift from a government agency.

Hopevale artists are recognised as emerging leaders in Indigenous fine arts industry and have exhibited throughout Australia. All artists access daily individual professional support and are provided with regular opportunities to build their professional capacity through artist residency programs. Hopevale Arts and Cultural Centre maintains a vision to support the empowerment of local Indigenous people through the production of traditional and contemporary art forms.
